Midnight sun
During the summer months, the sun never sets in northern Sweden. The constant daylight makes it possible to go hiking, swimming and spend time outdoors even in the middle of the night. The midnight sun is a unique natural phenomenon – here are our tips on how to experience it at its very best.
For centuries, the midnight sun has fascinated people and held a natural place in the culture and traditions of northern Sweden. North of the Arctic Circle, this special period during summer means daylight around the clock, as the sun never dips below the horizon.
When and where to experience the midnight sun
The midnight sun is at its most striking around the summer solstice, around 21 June, when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. All locations north of the Arctic circle experience the midnight sun for a certain period, and the further north you go, the longer it lasts. Here are a few places where you can experience the midnight sun:
- Abisko has midnight sun from 25 May–17 July
- Kiruna has midnight sun from 28 May–14 July
- Gällivare has midnight sun from 3 June–9 July
- Jokkmokk has midnight sun from 8 June–4 July

Experience the midnight sun at STF Aurora sky station
In Abisko, the midnight sun lingers for an extended period – and few places offer a more magnificent setting than Nuolja. Take the chairlift up to Aurora Sky Station and continue on foot towards the summit at 1,164 metres above sea level. Vast views of Lapporten, Torneträsk and the Abisko Alps await.
Several beautiful hiking trails start from the summit, and on the bare mountain plateau you’ll encounter rich and unique flora. You can also settle down on the terrace and simply take in the sweeping landscape. From mid-June to mid-July, the chairlift also runs in the evening – perfect for experiencing the magical light of the midnight sun from one of Sweden’s most spectacular viewpoints.
