Collapsed bridge along Gränsleden / Rádjebálges

The bridge over the Ubmasjåhkå stream along Gränsleden has collapsed and is completely unusable until further notice. This has a major impact on Gränsleden / Rádjebálges between Ritsem and the Norwegian Sörfjorden in Tysfjord municipality. Gällivare municipality strongly advises against any attempt to wade across the stream, as high water levels may pose a risk to life and health.

Alternative routes in the area: From Ritsem, you can instead choose the route north toward Sitasjaure and Hukejaure, and then connect to the Nordkalottleden trail toward Gautelishyttan. Another option is to take the boat from Ritsem across Ahkkajaure to Vaisaluokta. From there, follow the lake to its western end, connect to the Nordkalottleden trail, and either cross the Norwegian border toward Hellemobotn or follow the section of the trail that heads north to Røysvatnhytta. See a map and read more here (opens in new tab).

The sauna at Akka mountain cabin is not working at the moment. Thank you for your understanding.

About the accommodation

Mount Áhkká (also known as the “Queen of Lappland”) provides an eastern wall for the mountain cabin, with the faint sound of cascading water from the magnificent waterfall at Vuojatädno, two kilometres away on the Padjelantaleden hiking trail. Many people consider the view from the cabin to be the best STF has to offer.

View details

The location and surroundings make this mountain cabin popular among widely diverse groups, like families with children and alpinists. It’s only two kilometres from the boat landing near Änonjálmme to STF Akka, which makes getting here easy for families with children who want to use the cabin as a base camp for few days. Fishing, short hikes and swimming with rock slabs along the stream attract both children and adults.

At the mountain cabin, you have mobile coverage via GSM Telia.

The easiest alpine tour is to Pålnotjåkko Peak, from where you gain a panoramic view towards Áhkká and Padjelanta – the highest in the country. Only 300 metres from the cabin, near the beach at Akkajaure, is a field 200 metres long and 100 metres wide with possibly the largest concentration of Moor-king in northern Lapland.

Skiing in area is superb, with all types accessible. For those who want that little extra, they can dream of Áhkkás massive peak, 2,015 m.a.s.l. From the peak goes one of Sweden’s greatest ski runs – a change in altitude of an amazing 1,500 metres down to the lake.

A 200-metre icefall can be climbed on the northwest side of the massif. The first known climb from the valley straight up to point 1004 was done in March 2008 by two Polish climbers.

This is how it works in a mountain cabin
Our mountain cabins offer a simple and authentic stay in multi-bedded rooms with self catering. The rooms are different sizes with bunk beds and usually heated by gas stoves. On site you will be greeted by a cabin manager. As a guest you chop wood, fetch water from the stream or lake, wash up and clean up after youself.

It is easiest to get to Ritsem by bus from Gällivare, from where there are daily rail connections from Stockholm and other cities. It is a good idea to book train and bus travel in advance on the same Resplus ticket. If you want to book only the bus journey, you can do so at www.roadtoritsem.com/ Länstrafiken in Norrbotten no longer services the route between Gällivare and Ritsem.

If you are taking your own car to Ritsem, there are parking options at the harbor and at STF Ritsem. STF Ritsem also offers EV charging stations.

Tips for hiking

Signature trail Treparksmötet

Treparksmötet, the “Threeparks-Meet”, is the area where the Sarek, Padjelanta and Stora Sjöfallet national parks meet. Many walkers go through it on the way to or from Sarek.

Ritsem – Aktse

In Sarek National Park, you’re hiking in true wilderness. Several mountains rise over 2,000 meters above sea level, and there are more than 100 glaciers.

Padjelanta trail

The 160 kilometer long Padjelanta trail passes through Padjelanta National Park. Along the hike, you will see blooming mountain heaths, wild green-shimmering rivers, large lakes, rounded mountains, and spruce forests.
