About the accommodation

Welcome to the STF’s newest mountain cabin. It lies in a beautiful forest of mountain birch by the Stensån river beyond the reach of roads, 13 kilometres west of Vålådalen in the Vålådalen Nature Reserve, part of the Handöldalen Sàmi camp.

The summer offers fine orchids, while a bounty of chanterelles awaits you in the autumn. The site is a site of historic interest – the Sami people ran a school here in days past. Even today, the dwellings they used when harvesting peat can be found here, as can also remains of reindeer fencing in the birch forests.

The mountain cabin lies along the trail between Vålådalen and Sylarna. You can make excursions from the cabin to Lillstensdalfjället, Storstensdalen and Östra Bunnerskalet. You will be able to see dippers down at Stensån dive to the bottom and seek food in the flowing water. Stensån is perfect for a quick dip after a hot sauna, in summer and in winter.

This is how it works in a mountain cabin
Our mountain cabins offer a simple and authentic stay in multi-bedded rooms with self catering. The rooms are different sizes with bunk beds and usually heated by gas stoves. On site you will be greeted by a cabin manager. As a guest you chop wood, fetch water from the stream or lake, wash up and clean up after youself.

Tips for hiking

Storulvån – Vålådalen

This is a classic route that runs between two of Jämtlands mountain centres.

Vålådalen trail

Vålådalen is the starting point for the "Vålådalsfyrkanten hike", a route that passes between mountain cabins, specifically STF Lunndörren, STF Vålåstugan, and STF Stensdalen.

Hiking trails in Sweden

The amazing thing about hiking in Sweden is that there is always more to discover. You can hike on remote mountain peaks, along rugged coastlines, beside bright yellow rapeseed fields, or near major cities.
