If  you make your reservation by telephone or email directly with the chosen accommodation, other terms of cancellation may apply.

At most of our accommodations you can cancel your reservation until no later than 18.00 the day before arrival (no later than 7 days before arrival applies for some accommodations), then no refund will be made. The same terms & conditions applies if you booked the same day as arrival day and then do not check in at the accommodation. The booking becomes binding if it is made on the day of arrival. If the accommodation has incurred expenses related to your specific booking , you are required to also pay these. Variations may occur, but the accommodation will notify you when making the reservation.

For cancellation of activities and other products, different cancellation rules apply depending on the product, so check the terms & conditions for the specific product. Gift certificates, memberships and discounted offers are non refundable.

How do I get my digital membership card?

Download the STF app and download your digital membership card to your smartphone. You can also download it via My Pages on our website. It’s also fine to use the welcome letter you received by post or in Kivra as proof of membership.

Is my partner included in the member price?

The STF membership is personal and everyone in the party (16 and older) need to be a member in order to stay at a member rate. Everyone in the same household pay a maximum of SEK 600. The family price is valid for a maximum of two adults or senior members with an unlimited number of youth members. Children under the age of 16 will stay at a member rate when travelling with a STF-member.

Can I use my own sleeping bag?

In many of our accommodations you can use a sleeping bag, provided you have a sheet and pillowcase with you. The host decides whether to allow this or not. Please contact the accommodation in advance to make be sure of what rules apply.

At our mountain stations and mountain cabins, we recommend that you bring your own bed sheet and pillowcase (at mountain stations these can also be rented on site) in addition to a sleeping bag, travel sheet or duvet cover. For your own hygiene and safety, you should be able to cover all your bedding.

How much do I pay if I want a room for my self?

There is usually an additional fee.

Can I cook my own food?

It is possible to cook in the guest kitchens that are available at all accommodations. However, some STF hotels do not have guest kitchens. To ensure that the hotel you want to stay at has a guest kitchen, please read the description for your chosen hotel. The guest kitchen is equipped so that you can cook and eat your food. You share the kitchen and dining area with other guests.

Is there a shower and a toilet in the room?

Many of our accommodations have rooms with shower and toilet, as well as rooms where you share facilities with other guests. You will find information about the room types on each accommodations webpage. Our hotels always offer rooms with private shower and toilet.

Can I bring my pet and does it cost extra?

Many hostels have dog/pet friendly rooms and you can find this information on their websites (under “Facilities and Services”). Some hostels charge extra for the pet’s accommodation. Pets are welcome free of charge at STF’s mountain stations and mountain cabins, however these rooms are subject to availability.

Go to our map to discover all our accomodations.

Under “Accommodation” you can click “Change” and choose which service you want, in this case “Pets allowed”. Then you will see the accommodations that welcome pets.

At some accommodations you pay extra for your pet’s overnight stay, contact the accommodation directly if “pet friendly” rooms are not available while booking online.

At our mountain stations, you and your dog can stay in a private or shared pet-friendly room for an additional fee (service dogs are exempt from this fee). Our mountain cabins also have designated dog rooms that can be booked in advance by selecting the dog option when making your reservation. The surcharge is mandatory for those who wish to bring their dog. Only one person in the party is guaranteed a spot with their dog in the room; the remaining people in the group may be placed in another part of the accommodation. As the room may accommodate multiple dogs, it’s important that your dog is accustomed to being around other dogs in close quarters.

These rooms are limited in number, so it’s important to book a dog/pet-friendly room in advance. When booking online, it will indicate whether these specific rooms are available. If no dog/pet-friendly rooms are available, please try another date or accommodation.

What payment methods are accepted at STF accommodations?

At most of our accommodations, you can pay using the most common debit and credit cards, Swish, or cash. In some cases, the facilities are entirely cash-free or lack the option for card and Swish payments. Therefore, we recommend contacting your accommodation prior to your trip to find out which payment methods are available. Find your accommodation here.

Large parts of the mountain regions lack mobile connectivity, which means we cannot always offer card or Swish payments in STF mountain cabins. See payment options here.

Do I have to share a room with others?

At most of four accommodations you have the option of staying in your own room. If you choose a bed in a dormitory, you should expect to share the room with other guests. At our mountain stations, all our dormitory beds can be booked. As far as possible we try to accommodate different parties in different rooms, but you are not guaranteed your own room unless you have made a booking. If you don’t want to share a room with other guests, we recommend that you make your booking for those dates or accommodations where single occupancy is available. At our mountain cabins beds can only be booked in a multi-bed room, where you will usually share the room with others.

We also recommend our guests to pre-book accommodation in our mountain cabins. Bookings and repayments must be made for the specific date and cabin. Click here to make an online booking. When you pre-book your stay, you will receive a special discounted advance price, and you are guaranteed a bed as long as you arrive at the cabin no later than 18:00. Later arrivals are guaranteed an unspecified bed. You must be able to show your booking confirmation to the cabin host on arrival, either printed or digital. If you do not have the opportunity to make an advance booking, you can still pay on arrival. In that case you will be given an unspecified bed, which could mean a floor bed in the mountain cabin or a different indoor space. Unspecified beds are normally allocated after 18:00.

Kindly note that tent sites and day visits are not available for pre-booking and that service fees must be paid to the cabin host on arrival.

Can children walk in the mountains?

Yes, of course! Make short trips of a varied nature so that they don’t get tired. It can take half a day before they’ve finished playing beside a stream – so take it slowly. A good idea with young children is to have a base (tent or mountain cabin) from which to make trips, so you don’t have to carry too much.

Must I be super fit to go on a trip to the mountains?

Absolutely not. There are plenty of ways to enjoy Swedish mountain life without great hardship. Many people enjoy just walking or skiing in the vicinity of the mountain station or mountain cabin. Those planning to make longer excursions will, of course, feel better if they’re not completely out of shape.

Will my mobile telephone work throughout the mountains?

No. There’s relatively good coverage in the vicinity of the mountain stations, but don’t count on being contactable at all times. The further into the mountains you venture, the worse the coverage becomes.

Can I stay in cabins off-season?

Yes, but only in emergencies. There is a safety room in some mountain cabins and mountain stations without any road connection.

Is it safe to drink the water from mountain streams?

Yes – there’s nothing better! The water should be running and clear. You can even drink the lake water in the mountains.

Can I camp in the mountains?

How do I reach the top of Kebnekaise?

You go first to Kebnekaise’s mountain station, 19 km from Nikkaluokta, a bus journey from Kiruna. Then you spend the night at the mountain station and set out with the STF guide to reach the summit. You ought to allow a couple of extra days – depending on the weather it might not be possible to make the trip some days. The hike to the summit is tough, but most people can make it with moderate effort.

May I fish wherever I like in mountain lakes and streams?

No, you may not. It is, however, possible to purchase a fishing permit for a large number of lakes and stretches of water. Several of our mountain stations and mountain cabins sell these fishing permits. A county’s administrative committee (länsstyrelse) has information about its permitted waters.

Can a place to sleep be booked in the mountain cabins?

We recommend our guests to pre-book accommodation in our mountain cabins. Bookings and repayments must be made for the specific date and cabin. Book your stay in the mountain cabins online. The number of beds available for pre-booking is limited and depends on the type of cabin/area, so they may be fully booked.

At which times of year can one go walking in the mountains?

The season starts at midsummer and continues into September. High season is between about 20 July and 10 August. There are a lot of people in the cabins then, and in some places it can get a bit crowded. Winter season begins at New Year. Most mountain stations, however, open in February and remain open until the beginning of May. Mountain cabins open in late February/early March and are open until the beginning of May.

Where can I find the avalanche forecasts?

Here, you can find information about Swedish Avalanche forecasts (opens in new tab).

Can I bring my dog to the mountains?

Yes. According to the Rights of Public Access dogs must be kept on a leash from 1 March-20 August. Animal life is at its most sensitive to disturbance just then from even the most peaceful pet dog. Outside these times you must keep close watch over your dog, so that it doesn’t scare the wildlife. Special rules apply, according to the Nature Conservation Act, when taking your dog into a national park area. These rules can be found on the website for the respective county’s administration committee (länsstyrelse).

Dogs are welcome free of charge at STF’s mountain stations. Keep in mind that there are only a limited number of rooms allowed for pets/dogs, so it is important that you book these in advance. When you book online you will see if these specific rooms are available or not. If no rooms allowed for pets/dog are available, please try another date or accommodation.

How far apart are STF’s mountain cabins?

Our mountain cabins are located in scenic locations 10-25 km from each other, which is just a day trip for most people. Read more about our mountain cabins and look at a map to get an idea of how far it is between the specific cabins you want to visit.

How do I pay if there is no cabin warden around?

In the cabin you will find a payment slip that you can take home and use to pay for your stay. You can also pay the money into the BankGiro account BG 5313-0225. With the payment you should include your name, which cabin you stayed at, and the date of your stay.

Where can I see the midnight sun, and when?

In the very far north of Sweden, north of the Arctic Circle. At Nuolja in Abisko you can see the midnight sun between 27 May and 18 July.

Does STF offer guide courses online?

No. STF doesn’t run distance learning courses any longer. The Mountain Safety Council has brought out a standard course for guides. You can find these at the website www.fjallsaker.nu. You’ll also find there the Council’s contact details, for advice on who currently runs courses.

Are there lots of mosquitoes in the mountains?

It is true that there are mosquitoes, but no more than you will find in the archipelago of Stockholm or in the woods in Skåne. There are more mosquitoes in late spring/early summer, in mountain birch forests and near bog areas. Later in the summer there are few mosquitoes – sometimes none! Up on the mountain where the wind almost always blows, there are next to no mosquitoes.
