Which trains go to the mountains?
SJ (opens in new tab) is Sweden’s largest train operator and runs to many destinations across the country. When booking with SJ, you can search for your journey all the way from your departure point to your final destination. This way, you’ll always see departures that match with other modes of transport. SJ also offers a travel guarantee, so delays won’t affect your ability to reach your destination. SJ operates night trains on the Stockholm–Abisko–Narvik route, stopping at several places in central Sweden. On the way to Narvik, you’ll pass popular destinations like Gällivare, Kiruna, Abisko, Björkliden, and Riksgränsen.
Snälltåget (opens in new tab) offers several departures to the mountains and increases service during peak season. You can travel to both the Jämtland mountains (Åre mountains, Storlien, the Jämtland Triangle) and the Härjedalen mountains (Vemdalen, Ramundberget, Funäsfjällen, Bruksvallarna). From the train station, you can continue your journey with connecting transfer buses or taxis booked in connection with your train trip.
Norrtåg (opens in new tab) operates in northern Sweden, with routes from Sundsvall in the south to Kiruna in the north. With service extending toward Storlien and the Jämtland mountains, you have every opportunity to visit your favorite northern destination.
