Boats in the mountains
The mountains are cast, and depending on how you plan your adventure, you may come across big lakes and streams.
How long does it take to hike?
It is, of course, easier to hike on a smooth and flat trail than to climb a steep mountain, and your hiking speed will reflect this. The overview chart can give you an indication based on experiential grounds.
Mountain hiking
The Swedish mountain range stretches from Treriksröset in the north to Dalarna in the south. Here, you’ll find breathtaking landscapes and hundreds of kilometres of marked hiking trails.
Mountain hiking with children
Hiking with children is a simple way to explore nature together. With playful breaks, shorter stages, and small adventures along the way, the journey becomes just as memorable as the destination.
Mountain transport
Traveling to the mountain areas is often an adventure in itself. On this page you can read more about how to get there and what transport options are available once you arrive.
Packing lists
Wondering what to pack for a day hike in the mountains, or for a longer trek? Here you’ll find packing lists for both summer and winter, day trips and multi-day hikes, with or without a tent, and with or without children.
Prices, booking & payment in cabins

Reindeer in the mountains
As a visitor in the Swedish mountains and in all areas where reindeer herding is practiced, it is important that you do not disturb or scare the reindeer.
Right of public access
Sweden’s nature is open to everyone thanks to the right of public access. It is a unique opportunity that means you can freely roam most natural areas, even in privately owned forests and lands.
STF Mountain cabins
Staying overnight in one of our mountain cabins is perfect for those who want to venture a bit further into the mountains. There is no electricity or running water, making the experience a stark contrast to everyday stress.
STF Mountain shops
STF makes it possible to stock up along your mountain trek. In selected mountain cabins, you’ll find shops offering essential and popular products – carefully chosen to suit the mountain environment and support sustainable outdoor life.
STF Mountain stations
STF’s mountain stations are the starting point for great mountain experiences. A mountain station is a comfortable mix of a mountain hotel, hostel and guesthouse. Here, you choose your own level of comfort and price.
Tent and service fees
Camping in the mountains while hiking is free. However, if you want access to guest kitchens, drying rooms, showers, saunas, or other facilities at STF’s mountain cabins and stations, you will need to pay a service fee.
The trail system in the mountain areas
The state trail system consists of approximately 5,500 kilometers of marked trails, of which 2,250 kilometers are in Norrbotten and 1,940 kilometers in Jämtland.
Traveling with dogs
When you want to bring your four-legged friend on an adventure, there are a few things to keep in mind – but don’t let that stop you.
