Hiking for several days
Longing for a multi-day hiking adventure with overnight stays? Maybe you’ve done some hiking before and are curious about what a longer trek would be like? Here we share tips on both shorter and longer multi-day hikes.
Hiking for 2–4 days
The wide range of beautiful hiking trails in Sweden means there is plenty to choose from if you want to go on a multi-day hike with overnight stays, whether you prefer sleeping in a tent, at a hotel, or in a mountain cabin.
STF’s selected Signature Trails are well-marked and scenic routes, perfect for those who want to experience a lot in a short time. You choose which and how many stages you want to hike, and there is often accommodation along the way for those who prefer not to camp or stay in a wind shelter. Some shorter Signature Trails we recommend are Signature Trail Kinnekulle, Signature Trail Omberg, and Signature Trail Bergslagen.
If you would like to hike in a mountain environment, the Jämtland triangle is a great choice, offering moderately long daily stages, shops, and accommodation along the trail. The Vålådalen Trail is also a great option for those who want to spend a few days outdoors while still having access to comfort and services.
If you have previous experience of mountain hiking and are used to more advanced planning, Signature Trail Treparksmötet is an excellent option. However, you need to carry all your food for the entire hike, as there are no shops along the trail.
On a shorter hike of around 2–4 days, you usually don’t need to carry very heavy gear, especially if you stay in cabins, at a mountain station, or at a hotel. Just make sure you know where to refill drinking water when hiking in lowland areas, where water in streams and waterways is not safe to drink. Here you can read more about water management when hiking in lowland areas.

Week-long hiking
If you are ready to set out on an even longer hiking adventure, the Kungsleden is an obvious choice. Discover Vindelfjällen, where you can hike along our Signature Trail Ammarnäs – Hemavan. You choose whether to stay in mountain cabins, camp, or combine both. The stretch between Saltoluokta and Kvikkjokk is also a particularly beautiful section of the Kungsleden.
Signature Trail Höga Kusten offers an enchanting week-long hike with several overnight stays. You walk through a World Heritage Site, along the sea and dramatic cliffs. There is plenty to discover here, not least the famous Slåttdalsskrevan. You can also hike up Skuleberget and enjoy a cup of coffee at the summit cabin, 295 meters above sea level.
If you prefer a multi-day hike further south, Roslagsleden could be the perfect option. The Trail begins in Stockholm and heads north along the coast. Archipelago landscapes, idyllic villages, and varied nature await across a total of 190 km divided into 11 stages. It is easy to end your hike whenever you like and conveniently make your way back.
Skåneleden is extensive, offering a wide selection of well-marked sections to choose from. Signature Trail Skåne is one option, and you can extend your hike by continuing along Skåneleden.
Long-distance hikes
A long-distance hike is something truly special. Spending several consecutive days outdoors brings a sense of calm – a gentle rhythm where nature sets the pace for your days. It is a wonderful way to connect, be present in the moment and discover more of Sweden together with your companions.
The Kungsleden is one of Sweden’s most beloved hiking classics. It stretches through the mountain landscape for a total of 450 km, yet you can easily choose a section that suits your time and experience. Many make it a long-term goal to complete the entire trail, dividing it over several years. Along the way, you can stay in mountain cabins, camp, or combine both for a flexible experience.
For those seeking a quieter and slightly more independent journey, The Padjelanta Trail is an excellent alternative. Magnificent views await, along with plenty of cabins for overnight stays but fewer opportunities to resupply. This requires more careful planning and, in return, rewards you with a feeling of untouched mountain nature and deep tranquility.
Stockholm Archipelago Trail (opens in new tab) offers 270 km of hiking through the Stockholm archipelago. The trail stretches across 20 islands with well-marked paths and varied landscapes. You combine hiking with boat journeys between the islands, planning your route according to timetables and season. It is a unique opportunity to explore the archipelago on foot – from rocky shores and pine forests to open sea views. Don’t forget to plan your hike according to the boat schedules between the islands.
A true classic and challenge is the Green Ribbon, a journey from Grövelsjön in the south to Treriksröset in the north, covering approximately 1,300 km. You choose your own route and decide how to divide it – over weeks, months or even years. Read more about the Green Ribbon here (opens in new tab).
To make the most of your hike, careful planning is essential. Review your packing list, plan your meals and plan your route. Where can you stay? Where can you resupply? What equipment do you need for your specific journey? With good preparation, you create a sense of security – and even greater experiences along the way.
