Discover Bergslagsleden
Bergslagsleden offers a varied and exciting hiking experience. Many sections along the trail are easy to walk, but some have significant elevation changes, making them a bit more challenging. The sense of adventure is often present as you pass through mystical boulder-strewn landscapes and cave formations, shaped by the ancient ice age. During your hike, you’ll also encounter several environments connected to the old industrial communities.
There are numerous natural experiences along the trail, with opportunities to explore pristine nature, including in the national parks of Tiveden and Garphyttan.
Bergslagsleden connects to Västra Vätterleden at Stenkällegården near Karlsborg. After 280 kilometers, it ends in Kloten, just outside Kopparberg. The trail passes through Tiveden and Kilsbergen before reaching the Bergslagen area. Many rest shelters with toilets and often drinking water are available along your hike.
The trail is well-documented with sections, tips, attractions, and maps available on bergslagsleden.se.

See and do along the trail
At the end of section 7, you’ll reach the cave area of Skärmbodarbergen. Here, you can experience remnants of the ice age with steep ice-polished cliffs, impressive boulders, crevices, and caves. During section 13, a detour from the trail will take you to Jättebergen, an 80-meter-long cave system. These are just two examples of the many experiences along Bergslagsleden!
Don’t miss
On the first weekend of September each year, the ultramarathon Bergslagsleden Ultra takes place. This 46-kilometer challenge runs from Digerberget to Ånnaboda.
Transport to the trail
There are many points where you can start your hike. The primary starting point for Bergslagsleden is in Kloten. To get there, take a train to Kopparberg, then a taxi for the last 20 kilometers.
Most other section destinations are accessible by bus, train, or car.
Trail markers
Signs and markings can be found around tree trunks and posts. At crossroads and junctions, signs feature the Bergslagsleden symbol.
Sections along Bergslagsleden
Below are descriptions of Bergslagsleden’s sections, grouped into several multi-day hikes. We also provide recommendations for accommodations and other relevant hiking information.
Of course, it is perfectly fine to hike in the opposite direction from how the sections are presented.
Section 1–5: Kloten–Hammarby
80 kilometers, 5–7 hours of hiking over five days.
Accommodation: Various options including wind shelters, tents, and hostels
Your hike through Bergslagen begins in the old forestry village of Kloten. Passing through nature reserves like Getryggen and Jämmerdalen, you’ll reach the viewpoint Gillersklack at 407 meters above sea level. On day two, you’ll hike through the historic copper mining area of Finngruvan. As you skirt the edge of Kindla nature reserve on day three, you’ll be in remote wilderness. With a bit of luck, you might even spot bears, lynxes, or wolves. A highlight of the last day is the Lejakärret nature reserve, where the rich limestone environment supports various calciphile plants, including twelve species of orchids.
The trail primarily consists of forest paths and roads, surrounded by various forest environments, wilderness, large boulder fields, and fissure valleys. Camping is available for the first two nights. In Nyberget, there is a hostel (not STF), and in Uskavi, you can stay at STF Nora/Åkerby Manor, which is right along the trail. In Hammarby, accommodation is available at Hammarby community centre (not STF).
Section 6–10: Hammarby–Suttarboda
61 kilometers, 4–6 hours of hiking over five days.
Accommodation: Various options including wind shelters, tents, and hostels
On the first day, you’ll experience Långforsen, an important part of the area’s former iron industry. The rapids remain untouched and are especially impressive in spring. You’ll also pass a 300-meter detour to two giant’s kettles formed by glaciers. Day two brings more history with the mining sites at Pershyttan and Ramshyttan. Later, you’ll reach Skärmbodabergen, a fascinating cave area with impressive glacial relics. Section eight takes you to Ruskulan, Kilsbergen’s most beautiful viewpoint, offering a panorama of the entire region of Närke. Sections nine and ten are among the most popular on Bergslagsleden, likely due to Kilsbergen’s majestic troll valleys and four nature reserves.
Accommodations are available near the trail at Digerberget, Mogetorp, Blankhult, and Ånnaboda. In Suttarboda, there’s a wind shelter with a fire pit and a dry toilet about 300 meters south of the section’s endpoint. The trail here is mostly forest paths and roads.
Section 11–14: Suttarboda–Ramundeboda
72 kilometers, 4–6 hours of hiking over four days.
Accommodation: Various options including wind shelters, tents, and hostels
In section 11, you’ll hike through the finest parts of Garphyttan National Park, with its meadows and woodlands. Continuing south, you’ll enter the Båsbergen nature reserve, home to towering 300-year-old pines. In the Sixtorp nature reserve, forested areas give way to meadows and pastures. You’ll pass the old Svartå ironworks, showcasing a historical industrial community. Approaching Ramundeboda, you’ll cross Rankemossen, an untouched mire.
In Leken, Sixtorp, and Svartå Manor, you’ll find accommodations along the trail (not STF). The trail consists of forest paths and roads in these sections.
Section 15–17: Stenkällegården–Ramundeboda
47 kilometers, 4–6 hours of hiking over four days.
Accommodation: STF Tivedstorp hostel, Stenkällegården (not STF), Ramundeboda (not STF), and camping
This final stretch of Bergslagsleden takes you through Tiveden National Park. Expect ancient, enchanted forests, moss-covered rocky outcrops, and forest tarns. At the end of the day’s hike, you’ll find STF Tivedstorp’s quaint red cottages, your accommodation for the night. Days two and three bring historical highlights as you partly follow the Monk’s Trail, a path used by monks in the 15th century. You’ll also pass the Kråksjöåsen nature reserve, with its impressive esker. The last few kilometers before Ramundeboda run alongside the E20.
